As rain tapers off from northwest to southeast this afternoon, winds will quickly increase out of the northwest. Gusts as high as 45 to 50 mph are expected in south central South Dakota late this afternoon into tonight, with gusts 30 to 40 mph more common elsewhere. A second surge of stronger winds moves in late tonight into Friday morning, with gusts again as high as 35 to 45 mph possible. A brief break from the wind moves through Friday night, but south winds will become equally gusty on Saturday. While the recent rain may dampen fire risks today, the stronger winds Friday and Saturday will lead to areas of elevated fire danger. Use caution while harvesting or working in dry grass.
